Like in <i>$700 crazy</i>. It was basically just a frame. He would have to modify it too because we needed the microwave installed on top of the double ovens. So, he decided to build it himself. I didn't get a lot of great pictures but I did get some. Basically, he stared with a platform on the bottom.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mCeW1BKZfkI/UgJs4af3qgI/AAAAAAAAENU/wzGOPHIHqKE/s1600/DSC_0307.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mCeW1BKZfkI/UgJs4af3qgI/AAAAAAAAENU/wzGOPHIHqKE/s640/DSC_0307.JPG" data-pinit="registered" height="424" width="640" /></a><br />
He then lined the whole thing with sheetrock.<br />

I always wanted my ovens to look like they were built in "stone." Again, I used the Airstone product that matched the fireplace and kitchen bar. They worked great to cover up the homemade box that Rick built.<br />

I still need to touch up the places where you can see the glue, but other than that, this is done!Paulette @ Once Upon a Cedar Househttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16085495753469628078noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7768516180030318632.post-34181798914723903512014-07-24T12:11:00.000-05:002014-07-24T12:11:05.761-05:00Building a Kitchen BarIt has been so long since I have posted to this blog. I wrote a few posts - waiting on final pictures. I still haven't finished enough to have "final" pictures, so in an effort to update this blog (nearly two years later), I am going to go ahead and post these without the final pictures. I promise to go back and take final (or <i>current</i>) pictures.<br />
<br />
When designing the kitchen as an open floor plan, we knew we would need a bar to transition to the living room area. After the base kitchen cabinets were installed, the backside of the cabinets became the foundation of the kitchen bar. Since this area was open to the living room, we needed to tie the fireplace and the back of the bar together. I decided to use the Airstone product that I used to blend on the fireplace.<br />
<br />
He used a piece of plywood on the backside of the cabinets. Then he bought the corbels (he picked these dinky things out without me knowing). I would NOT have chosen these, as they are very small and cheap looking. However; he bought them and installed them before I could veto them. <i>Ugh</i>. Moving on.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DZZy6ohMKKY/UgJoy1_zLRI/AAAAAAAAELk/rDOK1cwGuc0/s1600/DSC_2746.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DZZy6ohMKKY/UgJoy1_zLRI/AAAAAAAAELk/rDOK1cwGuc0/s640/DSC_2746.JPG" data-pinit="registered" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is the view from the front. The bar will connect the support beam and make it look like all one piece.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KSOFQITArXk/UgJozHHfGNI/AAAAAAAAELg/UtVYZn4lfbc/s1600/DSC_2747.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KSOFQITArXk/UgJozHHfGNI/AAAAAAAAELg/UtVYZn4lfbc/s640/DSC_2747.JPG" data-pinit="registered" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I layed a sample of the hardwood floors that we will be putting down in order to leave enough room to scoot the hardwood under when we finally get to the floors. Glad I thought of this.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-87AE1dgEJ0Y/UgJoyyfRP1I/AAAAAAAAELc/HhjAskuJ09o/s1600/DSC_2748.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-87AE1dgEJ0Y/UgJoyyfRP1I/AAAAAAAAELc/HhjAskuJ09o/s640/DSC_2748.JPG" data-pinit="registered" height="640" width="424" /></a> </div>
<br />
Here it is with 90% of the Airstone on.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t4wgu4ftnSE/UgJozv4qTRI/AAAAAAAAELw/SrDsMJqL1jI/s1600/DSC_2749.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t4wgu4ftnSE/UgJozv4qTRI/AAAAAAAAELw/SrDsMJqL1jI/s640/DSC_2749.JPG" data-pinit="registered" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And here is the in progress shot of the front view.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N_ifVAo-H74/UgJozzvEjmI/AAAAAAAAEL0/hGjGF68rOqM/s1600/DSC_2754.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N_ifVAo-H74/UgJozzvEjmI/AAAAAAAAEL0/hGjGF68rOqM/s640/DSC_2754.JPG" data-pinit="registered" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
I had to leave it unfinished like this because I had to wait until we had the countertops installed to finish around the edges.<br />

<br />
Chelsea picked yellow and gray for the nursery colors, along with a chevron pattern. I began to gather ideas for her baby shower. Of course, we had a Pintrest board that we shared and I would pin ideas to the board and she would comment on whether or not she liked the idea. I wouldn't let her know what we were going to go with, but I used the board to get a reaction from her on whether or not things were "I love it" or "I hate it" kind of thing.<br />
<h2>
Baby Shower Invites</h2>
<div>
To stick with the theme, I found <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/116940890/neutral-baby-shower-invitation-yellow" target="_blank">these</a> cute baby shower invites on etsy. She customizes them and sends you the electronic file. Then I uploaded my file to Costco and had them print them on 4x6 photo paper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ASoxlce1KLw/UfksDvTlP4I/AAAAAAAAEIE/GFDPrl_cK9I/s1600/baby_shower_invite.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-pinit="registered" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ASoxlce1KLw/UfksDvTlP4I/AAAAAAAAEIE/GFDPrl_cK9I/s640/baby_shower_invite.png" width="442" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I attached the 4x6 to a piece of yellow cardstock and made a cute stamp to hold the ribbon around the invitation. I embossed the <i>Thank Heaven for Little Boys</i> on cardstock and glued another piece on the back of it to keep the ribbon around it. Here's a picture of them with the ribbon. Sorry about the bad iphone picture but this is the only picture I could find. </div>

<h2>
Bunting</h2>
I <i>love </i>bunting. However, I cannot sew too hot. My mother-in-law is trying to motivate me to learn to sew. She makes beautiful quilts (she made the baby one...pictures to come on that). She gave me her first sewing machine that Rick's dad gave her years ago to try and see if I will stick with sewing. So my first project was the bunting I used for the shower. I had an idea of what I wanted it to look like, but with no pattern or clue how to make it. So I just winged it. I went to Hobby Lobby and picked out several fabrics that I knew I wanted to use. I began to piece them together and the end result was this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-inMUw9cLOVo/UfkWlSGUsUI/AAAAAAAAECU/lYvBbvjGACY/s1600/DSC_0067.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-pinit="registered" height="262" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-inMUw9cLOVo/UfkWlSGUsUI/AAAAAAAAECU/lYvBbvjGACY/s640/DSC_0067.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TcvjusGuDW0/UfkZeAEgCiI/AAAAAAAAEEo/Aa0HCXLJgmw/s1600/542568_10200463634464761_371967352_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-pinit="registered" height="424" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TcvjusGuDW0/UfkZeAEgCiI/AAAAAAAAEEo/Aa0HCXLJgmw/s640/542568_10200463634464761_371967352_n.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I used the same twine that I used for the name banner and used it to hang his cute little onesies and socks. I spray painted wooden clothes pins and just stuck them up there.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I also made the bunting for the dessert table. This is the only picture I have of those. I knew she could later use them in the nursery.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mFdlB_c8dvo/UfkZhvdS5zI/AAAAAAAAEGQ/l1-Q8CHeEaQ/s1600/735141_10200463632064701_960909035_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-pinit="registered" height="424" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mFdlB_c8dvo/UfkZhvdS5zI/AAAAAAAAEGQ/l1-Q8CHeEaQ/s640/735141_10200463632064701_960909035_n.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Here is an in progress picture I found from my iphone. This shows the table bunting better.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-d5dueqMZMn8/Ufk9h-rvdDI/AAAAAAAAEJc/Oc2XYONx3kM/s1600/2013-02-28+20.01.23.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-pinit="registered" height="478" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-d5dueqMZMn8/Ufk9h-rvdDI/AAAAAAAAEJc/Oc2XYONx3kM/s640/2013-02-28+20.01.23.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h2>
Diaper Cake and Wreath</h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There were so many cute diaper cakes on Pintrest. I had been collecting things for awhile that I knew I wanted to use on her cake. Chelsea requested burlap ribbon and I added that under the yellow chevron ribbon that I bought at Hobby Lobby.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4TlKo_mqocM/UfkXWDGAusI/AAAAAAAAECc/Gnp-tuQltcI/s1600/74456_10200463468980624_172384207_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-pinit="registered" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4TlKo_mqocM/UfkXWDGAusI/AAAAAAAAECc/Gnp-tuQltcI/s640/74456_10200463468980624_172384207_n.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course, we had to have <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Vulli-Sophie-the-Giraffe-Teether/dp/B000IDSLOG/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1375280352&sr=1-1&keywords=sophie+the+giraffe" target="_blank">Sofie, The Giraffe</a> as the star of the cake! I ended up buying her at Sam's (see it <a href="http://www.samsclub.com/sams/vulli-sophie-the-giraffe-teether-and-plush-toy/prod6450155.ip?pid=_CSE_Google_PLA_Baby%20Toys&CAWELAID=730010300000083595%26catargetid%3D730010300000000192%26cadevice%3D%7bdevice%7d&cagpspn=pla" target="_blank">here</a>) and she came with a bonus stuffed animal that I ended up using too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5fFM7WNYUck/UfkXh7xGxGI/AAAAAAAAECk/Z2ZuGhfZSTw/s1600/601099_10200463499901397_1172381687_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-pinit="registered" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5fFM7WNYUck/UfkXh7xGxGI/AAAAAAAAECk/Z2ZuGhfZSTw/s640/601099_10200463499901397_1172381687_n.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's a view of the backside:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qu2cIuHYxeQ/UfkZkOoCdaI/AAAAAAAAEHo/V7FInar_7-I/s1600/DSC_0069.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-pinit="registered" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qu2cIuHYxeQ/UfkZkOoCdaI/AAAAAAAAEHo/V7FInar_7-I/s640/DSC_0069.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also "attempted" the wash cloth cupcakes as shown at the bottom of the cake. Those were not so cute. I didn't buy the right kind of wash cloths (I am guessing) so I really wasn't too happy with those. But I had so many, I went ahead and set them out for her anyway. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I used the extras I had and created a diaper wreath for her too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<h2>
Dessert Table</h2>
<div>
I had plenty of candy dishes leftover from our wedding (one day I will post those pictures here) candy bar. I decided to use some of those and buy yellow and white candy for the dessert table. I ordered my candy from <a href="http://www.candywarehouse.com/" target="_blank">here</a>. My mom bought the cake at a local bakery (and we made the bunting for the cake as well). I made the cupcakes and displayed them on the table and also used the extras for the thank you gifts.</div>

<h2>
Well Wishes</h2>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I found some really cute things to have guests write to the baby to put in his baby book and read when he grows up. So I created little cards (printed out on cardstock) for everyone to fill out. I just created this in a Word document (I can't figure out how to upload the Word file, so if you would like the file, shoot me an email and I will send it to you).</div>

<h2>
Diaper Raffle</h2>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Along with the invitation, we let everyone know that we were having a diaper raffle. I found this really cute basket (HomeGoods) to put the raffle tickets in. I knew she could use this in the nursery after the shower. The raffle was a great success. Mom and I purchased a Target giftcard to give as the prize<span style="font-family: Lucida Handwriting;"><span style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 13px;">. </span></span></div>

<h2>
Thank You Favors</h2>
<div>
I made extra cupcakes to send home with everyone as a thank you from the baby. I found this adorable poem on the internet (of course I tweeked it a little bit) and printed little cards on cardstock. Again, I have the Word file, so if you would like that file, email me and I will send it to you.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wanted to package the cupcakes really cute, but the pre-bought packaging was too expensive. So I found this tutorial <a href="http://homecookingmemories.com/easy-food-gift-ideas/" target="_blank">here</a> for these little packages using plastic solo cups. My mom made these (very late the night before) as I was finishing up the cupcakes. </div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the inside, my idea of shelving was completely different from what Rick was thinking. He began building the shelves in the form of a bookshelf. After he built the first "part" of his idea, I knew the design was not going to work for me. So, our first major disagreement happened <span style="font-size: xx-small;">during the pantry install</span>. What this meant was I had to implement my design of the shelves myself. And with a <strike>little</strike> lot of help from my stepfather, Ray. (Thank you so much for all your help Ray. I love you!) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I wanted to be able walk in the pantry, see all the items in front of me, and have very little wasted space on the shelves. I <em>hate</em> deep shelving in pantries. My last pantry was large, but it had really deep shelves. Items would get pushed to the back and get lost. I would find things months (sometimes years) later - not even remembering I had the items. Also, I had to get down on my knees to view the items on the bottom shelf. With this design, I rarely have to bend down to see something, even on the very bottom shelves. So nice.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Allison from <a href="http://www.houseofhepworths.com/" target="_blank">House of Hepworths</a> had this <a href="http://www.houseofhepworths.com/2012/02/09/how-to-install-shelves-in-a-closet/" target="_blank">great tutorial</a> on installing shelves in a closet. I basically followed her tutorial and created an L-shape set in my pantry. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I measured the height and width of the inside of my pantry. I marked where I wanted each shelf. I determined I would need five rows of shelves. I made sure I left enough room at the bottom (from the floor to the top of the bottom shelf) for heavy items I wanted to store. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I went to Lowe's and gave the guy a diagram with all the measurements. I asked him to figure out how much material I would need. (Remember my <a href="http://www.onceuponacedarhouse.blogspot.com/2012/08/installing-travertine-tile-in-kitchen_31.html" target="_blank">lack of math skills</a>?) <em>Mistake</em>. Verify they have it right. I ended up purchasing double the amount I needed because I didn't verify the guy's figures. Ughhhh! Math. I hate math. Bites me again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I came home and painted all the boards first. <em>Mistake #2* </em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I could've returned the extra boards if I hadn't painted them all first. It was on the second to the last board when the little light bulb went off and I thought <em>I think I have too many boards</em>. Duh!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">*I want to clarify that it was not a mistake to paint the boards first. It was just a mistake of not counting the boards first!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We have plenty of shelves now to do the entire two houses. I have great plans for my craft room. And there will be lots of shelves over there, so I guess it isn't such a big deal. Except we have to store the wood for approximately two years now. Great.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Back to the story.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We started off with strips of 1x2 boards. Rick had marked the studs at the top so they were easy to see. Using the strips, Ray drilled 3" deck screws* into each stud along the right side of the back wall.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">*Yes, it was probably overkill, but one of Rick's biggest fears was that this type of shelving would not be sturdy enough. There are no less than 300 - 3" deck screws in this baby. There will be no <em>crashing down in the middle of the night</em>, Rick. Thank.you.very.much.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ob8aW4MpRcs/UEdXURTmGLI/AAAAAAAAAfs/tzkmbGFaceE/s1600/Picture+068.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ob8aW4MpRcs/UEdXURTmGLI/AAAAAAAAAfs/tzkmbGFaceE/s640/Picture+068.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
He did the same process on the left side. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I bought 1x12 boards for the shelves. They came in 12' lengths. We sat the 1x12s on the edges of the 1x2 strips. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mBY5lA3AcNo/UEdXe5-KHNI/AAAAAAAAAf0/OewwpoB1OxE/s1600/Picture+069.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mBY5lA3AcNo/UEdXe5-KHNI/AAAAAAAAAf0/OewwpoB1OxE/s640/Picture+069.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EoeOcAise_E/UEdXoQi5CnI/AAAAAAAAAf8/QcxNFOzoTOg/s1600/Picture+070.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EoeOcAise_E/UEdXoQi5CnI/AAAAAAAAAf8/QcxNFOzoTOg/s640/Picture+070.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the left side, we butted the ends of the 1x12 to the edge of the boards on the right side. Then Ray attached a piece of the 1x2 vertically where the L brackets would be placed. This was needed to position the L bracket correctly. If there is not an extra piece here, the brackets would not be able to line up under the shelf. Make sense? If not, see the picture below to better understand this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, he drilled the L brackets into the back side of the wall and the underside of the shelf like so:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m4a9xixhj5U/UEdXJeJDaAI/AAAAAAAAAfk/15-XNYCIbr8/s1600/pantry_how_to.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m4a9xixhj5U/UEdXJeJDaAI/AAAAAAAAAfk/15-XNYCIbr8/s640/pantry_how_to.png" width="476" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I added a trim piece on the edge of each shelf. This gave it a finished look and also keeps things from sliding off the shelf. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I went back and used caulk to fill in gaps and nail holes. I also touched up the paint. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here is the final product:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The left side.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yTeFblI1GO8/UEdYubgpL7I/AAAAAAAAAgI/AlGYyaCY_Vs/s1600/DSC_2919.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yTeFblI1GO8/UEdYubgpL7I/AAAAAAAAAgI/AlGYyaCY_Vs/s640/DSC_2919.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
The right side.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UZlTwqZBW_I/UEdYvIZg8RI/AAAAAAAAAgQ/BlfvN1gpaQo/s1600/DSC_2920.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UZlTwqZBW_I/UEdYvIZg8RI/AAAAAAAAAgQ/BlfvN1gpaQo/s640/DSC_2920.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
From the center.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JAnoCSLrsrI/UEdYwgJQKSI/AAAAAAAAAgY/gzVFgGMOWlA/s1600/DSC_2921.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JAnoCSLrsrI/UEdYwgJQKSI/AAAAAAAAAgY/gzVFgGMOWlA/s640/DSC_2921.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
Looking up into the right corner. I love how the ceiling planks extend through the top of the pantry.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PlNowLb-ipE/UEdYzad1-gI/AAAAAAAAAgg/nWWEwdh8sIM/s1600/DSC_2922.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PlNowLb-ipE/UEdYzad1-gI/AAAAAAAAAgg/nWWEwdh8sIM/s640/DSC_2922.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
This is on the inside right side. I found this little word art of spices from <a href="http://whilehewasnapping.blogspot.com/2012/05/printable-spice-up-life-subway-art.html" target="_blank">While He Was Napping</a>. I just printed it out and placed it in a $3 frame from Walmart. Easy and cheap!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8c-3UvI3OCs/UEdY0dz8UgI/AAAAAAAAAgo/Ormh8QYIifM/s1600/DSC_2923.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8c-3UvI3OCs/UEdY0dz8UgI/AAAAAAAAAgo/Ormh8QYIifM/s640/DSC_2923.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
I got this sticker from Ross for $3. No one ever sees it but me. But I like it - it makes me smile every time I look at it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8QTE3tHGSDk/UEdY1m_wEkI/AAAAAAAAAgw/g3_A_F87D3c/s1600/DSC_2924.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="424" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8QTE3tHGSDk/UEdY1m_wEkI/AAAAAAAAAgw/g3_A_F87D3c/s640/DSC_2924.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's my cute little lamp. Everyone needs a little lamp on their pantry shelf - don't you agree? <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w5tVnCuR-V0/UEdY3caxNEI/AAAAAAAAAg4/HlOCDVfaMyQ/s1600/DSC_2925.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="424" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w5tVnCuR-V0/UEdY3caxNEI/AAAAAAAAAg4/HlOCDVfaMyQ/s640/DSC_2925.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I use the top shelf to store all my serving pieces. It is so easy to look up there and see what I have instead of digging boxes out from under cabinets. Since they have been stored up here, I have used my pieces more than ever before. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZFm9x9etR9Q/UEdY5YkGnrI/AAAAAAAAAhI/_jxmNyWswLE/s1600/DSC_2927.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="424" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZFm9x9etR9Q/UEdY5YkGnrI/AAAAAAAAAhI/_jxmNyWswLE/s640/DSC_2927.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And that is the inside of my cute little pantry. I still need to organize a little better. I have a lot of things in baskets and containers from Ikea and other places. I need to make labels for everything (I will be sure and do a separate post on that later) - I have tons of materials in my scrapbook stuff to be able to make some really cute labels. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If only my craft room was up and organized!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So the before and after...once again, just for fun:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Before:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
See, I told you that was fun!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Nothing would fit nicely there because of the way the wall with the windows lined up. See picture below. I like to look back at these old pictures and see the progress we have made!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NENGzHkOXSo/UDT3YEIK_MI/AAAAAAAAAQI/Hy1UqE4Wwtc/s1600/kitchen+demo1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="424" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NENGzHkOXSo/UDT3YEIK_MI/AAAAAAAAAQI/Hy1UqE4Wwtc/s640/kitchen+demo1.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
After many hours of "looking" at things, we decided to make the corner area my pantry. At first, I didn't think I was going to be able to have much space at all, but once we decided to put the pantry in the corner, I ended having tons of space. I thought maybe the pantry was going to be too large, but I am so glad we went with the bigger size because now I absolutely love it. <br />
<br />
To be honest, this whole design was 100 percent Rick. I was kinda nervous giving it over to him to see what he came up with. We are not always on the same page. I have an idea in my head and he has a completely different one in his. They don't always come together nicely. I try and find images online to show him when I know <em>he isn't getting it</em>. I have learned to show pictures even if it an elementary idea. Just.in.case.<br />

He told me he was going to build me a little shelf up top. I was good with that. So he began the construction. I wanted the ceiling to come down through the pantry so I could walk in and look up and still see the pretty planks. <br />
<br />
I didn't take many in-progress pictures because he mainly builds late at night since he doesn't have much time during the week. I am usually in bed way earlier than him because my day starts five hours before he even gets out of bed. So this next picture is going to jump to the pantry already sheet rocked. <br />

Everyone knows my affection for lamps. I think it is the bane of Rick's existence.<strong> </strong>I have lamps everywhere. If there is a plug, I most likely have a lamp. And guess what? There are two outlets on the back wall of this pantry. Bonus! I made sure to tell Rick not to cover them up when he was working on the back walls of the pantry. He asked me why I would need an outlet in a pantry. I can't believe I had to spell it out for him. Of course it is a perfect spot for a lamp. Not a big one. Just one of the cute mini lamps - you know, the kind with the nightlight bulb. Another bonus: we are able to run an extension cord from the lamp on the top shelf to the plug and I can easily turn my lamp on and off. Well, ok...turn it on. I never turn it off! <br />
<br />
I painted the outside of the pantry Sherman Williams Kilim Beige. It took me no less than ten different paint samples to settle on my paint colors. (more on that later)<br />
<br />
Looking at colors online are completely different than what they look at in person (hence the tons of paint samples). However, I think this is a good example of the color:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EwG-d7CIGZc/UEDysxqyHEI/AAAAAAAAAeQ/sOSP3gqu-HQ/s1600/sw_kilim+beige.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" fea="true" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EwG-d7CIGZc/UEDysxqyHEI/AAAAAAAAAeQ/sOSP3gqu-HQ/s320/sw_kilim+beige.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.myperfectcolor.com/en/color/27031_Sherwin-Williams-SW6106-Kilim-Beige" target="_blank">source</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In my pictures, it looks a lot lighter than this. In real life, it is closer to the above sample. When I started painting, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not. So I did what I do when I buy a gallon of paint and have not planned for the <em>Oh no...I don't think I like this scenerio</em>...I painted it and <strike>look at</strike> lived with for awhile. Turns out, I decided I liked it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The jury is still out on the red color up top. Everyone who has seen in in person gives the thumbs up. There are days when I like it and other days - not so much. So we'll see. It is staying for now because there are 100 other items I need to do. This will probably be something I will come back to in a few years and redo.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are the most recent pictures of the outside of the pantry. We need to add crown molding along the top of the cutout (above the top shelf). This picture gives you a sneak peek of the inside of the pantry. The full post on the inside is coming next.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
We installed the panels horizontally on the outside and inside of the pantry. I really like the look of this because I think it coordinates with the ceiling planks. I went ahead and painted the inside before installing the shelves. Much easier!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xBDcRQTUQa0/UEdQI-5KlgI/AAAAAAAAAe0/KlEqj5_H-LI/s1600/DSC_2917.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="424" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xBDcRQTUQa0/UEdQI-5KlgI/AAAAAAAAAe0/KlEqj5_H-LI/s640/DSC_2917.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The door still needs to be stained (same color as the planks in the ceiling).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9ISqgyQAu64/UEdQNGJnP9I/AAAAAAAAAe8/cQFSU2aGO7o/s1600/DSC_2918.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9ISqgyQAu64/UEdQNGJnP9I/AAAAAAAAAe8/cQFSU2aGO7o/s640/DSC_2918.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is a closeup of the etching in my door. It is hard to see in the other pictures but I seriously love this. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vup8c18P--4/UEdQS5pJpxI/AAAAAAAAAfE/SHG4r2Vjtas/s1600/DSC_2928.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vup8c18P--4/UEdQS5pJpxI/AAAAAAAAAfE/SHG4r2Vjtas/s640/DSC_2928.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>

Since the main room is one big open room, I thought it would be cool to have the floor define the space. Originally, I thought I wanted all hardwoods in the living/kitchen. Then I saw the <a href="http://onceuponacedarhouse.blogspot.com/2012/08/kitchen-demo.html" target="_blank">water damage</a> by the sink area. Wood? No thanks. <br />
<br />
We will install the hardwoods when everything is complete. Who knows when that will be, so we had to figure out the angles before we could install the tile. Now, I am not much into math. Actually, I <em>suck</em> at it. So, I left the "figuring" to Rick.<br />
<br />
We have a saying around here. It takes several hours (sometimes days) to <em>look</em> at something before we can actually <em>do</em> something! I don't know where that came from because I never used to be that way. But seriously, I have to look at something for a long time before I make the commitment to accomplish or even start a project. <br />
<br />
Anyway...back to my point. Rick had to have days to look at the angles before he could begin marking the angles. He even bought a protractor or something like that. I think it is something you use in Geometry. But, I wouldn't know. Geometry is the only class I have ever failed. A big fat 'F' in that subject. Who knew you'd really use that stuff in real life? If I could go back and tell my 16 year old self - <em>Hey, you better pay attention. When you are in your 40s, you are going to need to know this to lay tile</em> - I would think I was crazy and said I would never do that sort of thing! Oh, the illusions we have as teenagers!<br />
<br />
We used a laser level to shoot from one corner of the room to the other. We marked the angle. This first angle is the entrance to the front of the kitchen. The tricky part was the entrance to the kitchen back by the sink area. The angle started behind the one we marked for the entrance. So, after much deliberation, Rick marked each angle and that is the line I followed to start the tile. <br />
<br />
Obviously, the point of this story is: <em>If the angles are off, it is Rick's fault</em>. ;)<br />
<br />
This is the entrance at the front of the kitchen. I wanted to start the tile so it looked nice because this is going to be very visible. <br />

<br />
Rick is acting like it wore him out! <em>Not</em>. <br />
<br />
I have to give him credit. He did all the cuts for me. Goes back to my lack of Geometry skills. And don't even get me started on trim and crown molding. <em>45 degrees - what?</em> And level? Yeah, looks straight to me. (This drives Rick crazy.) <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And that, my friends, wraps up the tile. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
*Footnote: I intend to get better shots with my good camera of the finished project. I am writing these posts four months after the fact and I have found I did not take near enough pictures as I was working through these projects. I will get better. <span style="font-size: xx-small;">hopefully!</span></div>

The pantry is next. Really Mom, I promise! ;)</div>

I installed the tile and knew it was a tile I could easily work with. This picture was taken in my Garland house when I was still grouting and no baseboards were installed at the time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xoPAKLodOP8/UDfTg_74zyI/AAAAAAAAAYU/1RKAJs-JfRg/s1600/garland_tile.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xoPAKLodOP8/UDfTg_74zyI/AAAAAAAAAYU/1RKAJs-JfRg/s640/garland_tile.jpg" width="640" yda="true" /></a></div>
I bought the tile at Floor and Decor in Plano. It is from the <a href="http://www.flooranddecoroutlets.com/s32100269.html" target="_blank">Noce Travertine Tile Collection</a>. <br />
<br />
This is a smaller version of the tile I bought. This is a fairly accurate color of the tile.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div align="center">
<br /></div>
<div align="left">
Installing tile on concrete floors vs installing tile on wood subfloors is a big difference. I soon found out it is much easier to install on concrete than install on a subfloor! </div>
<div align="left">
<br /></div>
<div align="left">
First we had to install cement backer board. We purchased 1/4" HardieBacker cement boards like these:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qbg4Umblstg/UDfdGmSnFcI/AAAAAAAAAZI/k1ZrZTxJ0tk/s1600/HardieBacker.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qbg4Umblstg/UDfdGmSnFcI/AAAAAAAAAZI/k1ZrZTxJ0tk/s640/HardieBacker.jpg" width="640" yda="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are some pictures of the cement boards already down. This is also a shot of the start of my pantry. The duct tape on the floor is the rough area of where the island would sit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V4lVlnjkFRg/UDfVWnA18QI/AAAAAAAAAYk/X_SZotQkEwQ/s1600/pantry+starting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V4lVlnjkFRg/UDfVWnA18QI/AAAAAAAAAYk/X_SZotQkEwQ/s640/pantry+starting.jpg" width="478" yda="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What a difference my good camera makes! Here is another shot of the cement boards on the floor.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-faPsN4g8XOo/UDfVrLFDZfI/AAAAAAAAAYs/_srPP5uKajs/s1600/back+wall3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-faPsN4g8XOo/UDfVrLFDZfI/AAAAAAAAAYs/_srPP5uKajs/s640/back+wall3.JPG" width="424" yda="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Rick positioned these in the general area of where we were going to tile. He just laid them down. We knew they had to be secured but to what extent, I had no clue. So, I googled it. How did we ever live without Google?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div align="left">
<a href="http://flooring.about.com/od/installing-a-floor/ss/Installing-Cement-Board-Underlayment-For-Tile.htm" target="_blank">From this site</a>, I discovered you must first use thin set mortar under the cement boards. Really? The instructions said <em>if you lay flooring over just the plywood subfloor, your plywood could swell and contract causing the flooring material to break and buckle. It is especially important to use cement board in areas with high moisture such as a bathroom and kitchen area. </em>Well, crap!</div>
<div align="left">
<br /></div>
<div align="left">
Back to the instructions...you spread just enough thin set for each piece, leaving an 1/8" gap between the boards. That was great, considering Rick had already cut every single piece and butted them right up to each other. 1/8" doesn't sound like much but when it is all lined up, everything gets out of whack. Then you must tape and mortar the seams together.</div>
<div align="left">
<br /></div>
<em>Once you have the first piece firmly in place and set into the mortar, you want to secure it to the subfloor using 1 1/4” cement board screws. Drive these screws in every 6 inches around the perimeter of the sheet. Then go through the middle and drive them in every 8-10 inches. Make sure that you counter sink the head of the screw in so that it is perfectly flush with the surface of the material.</em> <br />
<div align="left">
<br /></div>
<div align="left">
Do you know how many screws that is per sheet? After carefully looking at the sheets, I noticed these round circles all over the board. I always wondered about that, but thought it was the manufacturer's design element in it! Ha. Yeah, it was a design element alright. Designed to guide in placing the 102 some-odd screws in each freaking board! This is from a closeup shot I took of the board and I didn't even get the whole thing in view so I could point out all the little places the have marked for your screws.</div>
<div align="left">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YNGPPgymhHE/UDfeGUD43LI/AAAAAAAAAZQ/PO57NfM6JQw/s1600/HardieBacker_with_arrows.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YNGPPgymhHE/UDfeGUD43LI/AAAAAAAAAZQ/PO57NfM6JQw/s640/HardieBacker_with_arrows.jpg" width="640" yda="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You must use these special screws for this too...of course you do! Another issue I had to deal with. The guy at Floor and Decor showed me the type to use. When drilled in, they countersink so the head of the screw goes down below the surface of the board. <em>Well, some do</em>. That is...if you have enough strength and enough power in your drill battery to make that happen. My cute little drill gun didn't have enough umph to drill through them. I had to use Rick's Dewalt power drill that he hoards. Whatever. He thinks his tools are better than mine. (and most are, but he doesn't have to always point that out...jeez!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, he gives me his drill and I set to work. Keep in mind, I am doing all this while him and Zach are putting up the final side of the ceiling. After hearing me cuss and moan for about an hour, he takes a break and strolls over and checks out my progress. I had only gotten about 20 screws done during that time. (I am not exaggerating!) He says to me - <em>You know, it is much easier if you predrill those holes before you put the screw in</em>. I thought I was going to kill him! Why didn't he tell me that before? I think he does that just to find some humor in messing me with. Rick? Oh, no! He would never do that sort of thing. After all, he is Every Girl's Dream. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, after <strike><span class="Apple-style-span" style="text-decoration: line-through;">I</span> figured out</strike> Rick telling me to predrill the holes, things did go a lot smoother and faster. When all the boards were done, I added a mesh tape (the same I use between pieces of sheetrock) and used some thin set to hold them all together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, I was ready to install the tile. </div>
<div align="left">
. </div>

Yay...finally, we could begin to see some progress from a "cosmetic" point of view. That's what I was thinking anyway. <br />
<br />
Forgive me for some of the quality in these pictures. It is a miracle that I have as many as I do. I need to start taking better pictures - with my good camera, in good light. I have a lot to learn about all this. ;)<br />

After it was up, and I looked at it for awhile, I decided I really liked it. It adds a lot of warmth to the big room. Things are starting to feel like home. Just have to deal with the exposed insulation and not to mention my pantry items all on the open shelving! </div>

The pantry is next. It is one of my favorite things now!</div>

During my research, I found <a href="http://theletteredcottage.net/ceiling-ideas/" target="_blank">Ceiling Ideas</a> from The Lettered Cottage. They used some thin boards, painted white. I loved the "cottage" look and especially liked the painted white planks. Rick was NOT into painting the planks white. He is more of wood lover. <br />
<br />
We shopped local home improvement stores and a few lumber yards. We found pine tongue and groove planks with a much thicker feel to them. We finally found what they call "car siding." It had a lot of character, with the pine knots and different markings in the wood. We got an excellent price on it and Rick went and picked up a trailer load of the planks. <br />
<br />
So while he was prepping the ceiling, my job was to sand and stain each plank. I decided to do all the staining and sealing before putting them up. I did not want to do that work over my head.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rnuNzrhlmsE/UDdykzOV9AI/AAAAAAAAAVY/C0TX6Hy58ew/s1600/Picture+017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rnuNzrhlmsE/UDdykzOV9AI/AAAAAAAAAVY/C0TX6Hy58ew/s640/Picture+017.jpg" width="478" yda="true" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9bE1n2D2e-s/UDdymg1V5pI/AAAAAAAAAVg/jxro_lh3IIg/s1600/Picture+018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9bE1n2D2e-s/UDdymg1V5pI/AAAAAAAAAVg/jxro_lh3IIg/s640/Picture+018.jpg" width="478" yda="true" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4Yg1xl07SVM/UDdy3rvZWgI/AAAAAAAAAV0/L3Vf5Z-5WHI/s1600/Picture+020.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4Yg1xl07SVM/UDdy3rvZWgI/AAAAAAAAAV0/L3Vf5Z-5WHI/s640/Picture+020.jpg" width="478" yda="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First I sanded them down. Then I applied wood conditioner so the planks would take the stain evenly. Then I applied two coats of stain. This made a big difference. One mistake I made - do not let the pre-stain dry before applying the stain. I did not read the directions carefully. Thank goodness I only did that on about six planks. I had to go back and sand them all down again and start over. Not fun. Once it dries, it does not let the stain absorb. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.minwax.com/wood-products/preparation/" target="_blank">source</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I ended up using the color <em>Golden Oak</em>. I bought approximately ten different colors before finally deciding on this color! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N0YuzZ12XbA/UDd0kIoCjrI/AAAAAAAAAWM/DXY4tf2STX4/s1600/wood-finish.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N0YuzZ12XbA/UDd0kIoCjrI/AAAAAAAAAWM/DXY4tf2STX4/s1600/wood-finish.jpg" yda="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.minwax.com/wood-products/stains-color-guide/" target="_blank">source</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As I was staining the planks, I panicked a bit because this was <em>not</em> the look I was going for! I wanted the cottage feel like this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dQy4AHJlJ8o/UDd1pU8jWGI/AAAAAAAAAWU/9T_1JAvaQow/s1600/ceiling_ideas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dQy4AHJlJ8o/UDd1pU8jWGI/AAAAAAAAAWU/9T_1JAvaQow/s640/ceiling_ideas.jpg" width="426" yda="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://theletteredcottage.net/ceiling-ideas/" target="_blank">source</a></div>
<br />
I called Rick and told him I had decided to paint the boards white. He had a little meltdown and told me if I painted them white, he was not installing them! Ok. I had to compromise. The planks weren't smooth like the ones from my inspiration picture. I did like the character the pine knots added to the planks. I just didn't want the <em>rustic</em> look so much. Or the feedstore look. Or country...get what I mean?<br />
<br />
At this point, I didn't have much choice. I knew Rick wasn't kidding about not installing them. I took a deep breath and just applied the stain. And {tried} to lived with it. <br />

After removing the drop ceiling from the kitchen area, we had to rethink that plan. There was a porch in the area where the galley kitchen was located. The beams extending down over that area were weathered pretty bad. See where the beams are actually notched out from where the old drop ceiling had been. And notice the difference in the wood. I knew there was no way we could ever make that look pretty!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gTzLusNXCOk/UDduLGOUiSI/AAAAAAAAATk/5-H3P2QHLaI/s1600/back+wall2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gTzLusNXCOk/UDduLGOUiSI/AAAAAAAAATk/5-H3P2QHLaI/s640/back+wall2.JPG" width="640" yda="true" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tPLCWwlj5zc/UDdumiUMyVI/AAAAAAAAATs/SBcGSKtc-eA/s1600/after+demo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tPLCWwlj5zc/UDdumiUMyVI/AAAAAAAAATs/SBcGSKtc-eA/s640/after+demo.JPG" width="640" yda="true" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-51S3-P90Fck/UDduxWs7T6I/AAAAAAAAAT0/0xkM7ENAXpM/s1600/after+demo1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-51S3-P90Fck/UDduxWs7T6I/AAAAAAAAAT0/0xkM7ENAXpM/s640/after+demo1.JPG" width="640" yda="true" /></a></div>
This picture really shows the distinct lines in the beams.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3f4wzaeqros/UDdwF4wwZUI/AAAAAAAAAUE/TPFYu4iYFas/s1600/sheetrock+over+glass1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3f4wzaeqros/UDdwF4wwZUI/AAAAAAAAAUE/TPFYu4iYFas/s640/sheetrock+over+glass1.JPG" width="424" yda="true" /></a></div>
Not to mention, each beam was a different width and they were definitely not level. We agreed to cover them up. <br />
<br />
First, we installed styrofoam type panels inside each of the beams. There is not an attic in this part of the house and the ceilings are so high. The heat rises and it is hot up there! <br />
<br />
He ran 1x2s on each side of the beams and we cut the styrofoam pieces to fit in between each beam, leaving about a two/three inch gap. Zach came out and was a lifesaver helping with this. He is tall and it helped because he had to reach way up to get to the very top of the peak!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d19icb4SIe8/UDdsw1-rn-I/AAAAAAAAAS4/AcpfoJpp34k/s1600/Picture+011.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d19icb4SIe8/UDdsw1-rn-I/AAAAAAAAAS4/AcpfoJpp34k/s640/Picture+011.jpg" width="478" yda="true" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0qNRIocbZMk/UDdsxxzBasI/AAAAAAAAATA/AyWA8n7PXF4/s1600/Picture+012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0qNRIocbZMk/UDdsxxzBasI/AAAAAAAAATA/AyWA8n7PXF4/s640/Picture+012.jpg" width="478" yda="true" /></a></div>
<br />
Rick then installed strips of wood that would hold up the planks. And at every intersection of each beam, he had to shim each one. This was a tedious job to say least!<br />
<br />

It had a drop ceiling with florescent lighting. The first thing I saw when looking at the kitchen was the wall dividing the living and kitchen area. I knew it needed to come down. Of course, one of my must haves was a nice, big kitchen. I knew the room had potential to be opened up, allowing for a complete redesign of the kitchen/dining/living room. </span><br />

With one catch. It would not open. Nor had it opened in <em>years</em>. The reason it would not open was the weight of the house had fallen down over the door and therefore, the door couldn't slide open and closed. This was the reason there was a pole in the living room when we first saw the house. The pole was there when the first appraiser went to appraise the house for our loan. She thought the house was going to fall down if the pole was removed. They denied the loan. We went with Plan B. Luckily we had a Plan B!<br />
<br />
During Plan B, Rick removed the pole from the house (and no, the house didn't fall down) and we never had to deal with the pole again...until Rick jacked the house up to put the support beam up and reinforce the header over the new front door. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This picture shows the view after the sliding glass door was removed. If you look at the top of the pole, the support beam was already installed. Rick built another support pole that is not shown in this view. It is incorporated into the kitchen bar. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_wWE9eRzFLE/UDUb1gxaZuI/AAAAAAAAAR4/2vSGeodg0LI/s1600/front+door+install.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_wWE9eRzFLE/UDUb1gxaZuI/AAAAAAAAAR4/2vSGeodg0LI/s640/front+door+install.JPG" width="424" yda="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the door installed. Sorry about the pictures on this. I alternate between my good camera and my iPhone camera. Sometimes the iPhone doesn't take the greatest shots but if I don't take them with the iPhone, I wouldn't have them at all. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1HCEQPiTTFM/UDUc655TNjI/AAAAAAAAASA/fTpYrF_YgnA/s1600/front+door.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1HCEQPiTTFM/UDUc655TNjI/AAAAAAAAASA/fTpYrF_YgnA/s640/front+door.jpg" width="478" yda="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We purchased this door from <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/buy/masonite-texas-star-36-in-x-80-in-steel-white-pre-hung-right-hand-inswing-34-oval-entry-door-288520.html" target="_blank">Home Depot</a>. We both really liked it. It needs to be painted.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RnIRim4QyRE/UDUbxIqZaSI/AAAAAAAAARw/UuSM3n85cvU/s1600/front+door1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RnIRim4QyRE/UDUbxIqZaSI/AAAAAAAAARw/UuSM3n85cvU/s640/front+door1.jpg" width="478" yda="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After the door was installed, Rick insulated between the stained glass windows and covered it with sheetrock. These windows get the late afternoon sun. We decided we would cover the glass above and try to cut down on so much heat coming in from this area. In the picture below, the new support beam is clearly in view. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WsC0484xT78/UDUf6zjnjSI/AAAAAAAAASY/XGeoK7_Rupo/s1600/sheetrock+over+glass.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WsC0484xT78/UDUf6zjnjSI/AAAAAAAAASY/XGeoK7_Rupo/s640/sheetrock+over+glass.JPG" width="640" yda="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the next picture, the new header over the front door is clearly visible. No more glass (from inside the house anyway!).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D95CSdl9NEE/UDUf9hGQrnI/AAAAAAAAASg/zaCR_mcSsyI/s1600/sheetrock+over+glass1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D95CSdl9NEE/UDUf9hGQrnI/AAAAAAAAASg/zaCR_mcSsyI/s640/sheetrock+over+glass1.JPG" width="424" yda="true" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And with that, the door is installed!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next up, getting ready to install the ceiling.</div>

I wanted to give you an idea of what the house was like when we originally purchased it. After working so hard on the house, it is hard to remember what it was really like in the beginning. I love to look back on the original and in-progress pictures so I can truly see just how far we've come. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">At this time, Rick was working on prepping the roof for the installers to put a metal roof on. He had to replace a bunch of boards and other things. Not to mention, he had to jack the house up to put a support beam up and relevel the house. {That is a separate post I will get to soon.}</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I couldn't do a whole lot of work, but what I could do is try and tear out as much sheetrock and old flooring as I could. I started with the smallest wall and began scraping up the old floor. The "stone carpet" seen in this picture is the original carpet. It was under the carpet when I pulled it up. I don't think I have ever seen carpet like that before! </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HuqkqiMzHLY/UDTrvqAtkWI/AAAAAAAAAOE/pK7vocEdW_Y/s1600/floor+demo+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" mda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HuqkqiMzHLY/UDTrvqAtkWI/AAAAAAAAAOE/pK7vocEdW_Y/s640/floor+demo+3.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When I removed the floor around the sink area, I noticed there was quite a bit of water damage. There was a particle-like floor under the linoleum flooring. It would literally disolve into a sawdust pile. I had to remove all that was damaged. As you can see, we had to go all the way to the original subfloor. In the picture below, the wood planks showing was part of the original porch. My neighbor Shellie grew up in this house (she lives right next door to us now and it is so nice to have them as friends!) and she gives me some history on things from time to time. Apparantly, they added this kitchen on during some renovations after the original house was built. Just an interesting bit of info...</span></div>

We call it the "little house." I am going to make a craft room in what is currently the living room. In a long time from now. :( </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uT89hLHAm08/UDOAqy9HfTI/AAAAAAAAAKo/jQz5d5vUmzo/s1600/DSC_2151.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" mda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uT89hLHAm08/UDOAqy9HfTI/AAAAAAAAAKo/jQz5d5vUmzo/s640/DSC_2151.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is the view from the back. The only door is the sliding glass door. We will eventually replace it with a french door. </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I took this picture after I had powerwashed just the sliding door of Rick's "workshop." I couldn't find a before picture other than this one. The door is like an old sliding barn door. It is a really neat feature. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Now let me show you our <em>favorite</em> part of the house...the back! </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Inside the living room, there is another glass sliding door. This looks out onto a big, open deck.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There is a hot tub! <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here is a view from outside looking back at this sliding glass door.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GxDhT1sY-w8/UC40lri-jyI/AAAAAAAAAJU/iYETIB01liA/s1600/DSC_2126.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" mda="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GxDhT1sY-w8/UC40lri-jyI/AAAAAAAAAJU/iYETIB01liA/s640/DSC_2126.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is standing in between the little house and the main house, looking back at the main deck.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The old roof and gutters need to be replaced/removed. This is the view from down the stairs to the left.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There is a huge concrete area. This is Shirley checking out the missing railing! Everything is just cosmetic! ;)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So, we have a little work to do! But from this back deck, the view is this:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QKMNl23HM-E/UC43SPMGQUI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/_NNnJApbvoQ/s1600/DSC_2139.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" mda="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QKMNl23HM-E/UC43SPMGQUI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/_NNnJApbvoQ/s640/DSC_2139.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And looking back to the right...this is the back of the cove. It makes a turn and runs alongside our neighbors house.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In these pictures, the old wood retaining wall can barely be seen. Rick is checking out the work that needs to be done on the wall.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Looking down this way, the cove opens up to open water. This is the way to Don's Port Marina. Don's Port is located up the cove and to the right.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When we bought the house, North Texas was in the middle of a drought. The summer of 2011 didn't get much rain. The water level continued to go down. Looking back on these pictures, the water level here was not too bad. It got worse. Much worse. There was a time after we moved in, all the water was pretty much gone from about where Rick is standing back to around the back end of the cove. It was very sad. We didn't think we would ever see the water full back there. The lowest level in the lake was 314.17 on December 3, 2011. This picture was taken August 5, 2011 and the lake level was 317. It dropped about three feet in four months.</span></div>

</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One thing about this little dream house of ours...curb appeal is lacking, to say the least! But, we have grand plans to remedy the problem! For now, here is the picture I took the very first time we saw the house.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NzsIeuT3nz0/UCz6-S6_f6I/AAAAAAAAAHs/t9vjteYk5Y8/s1600/DSC_2125.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" mda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NzsIeuT3nz0/UCz6-S6_f6I/AAAAAAAAAHs/t9vjteYk5Y8/s640/DSC_2125.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QqBsn98lEPE/UCz7NG2HegI/AAAAAAAAAH0/m1pRpCrowKA/s1600/DSC_2158.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" mda="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QqBsn98lEPE/UCz7NG2HegI/AAAAAAAAAH0/m1pRpCrowKA/s640/DSC_2158.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the first things I did was start by power washing the entire house. I did it in phases. I started with the back deck and worked my way around to the front. The cedar planks tend to collect spiderwebs. We have a <em>ton</em> of spiders. They are not the big Charlotte's Web type spiders. They are mostly teeny, tiny spiders. Bob (my next door neighbor) tells me we have "migrating spiders." He says the spiders shoot off long, silken threads so the wind can carry them away. Some are known to travel hundreds of miles in a very short time. Our house must be a sightseeing spot for them because they will literally appear overnight! Oh, and the dirt daubers...I don't know what to say about those! They drive me crazy and make their nests everywhere! Even inside the walls. It seems like I removed thousands of those hard, clay-like nests. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Anyway...back to the power washing! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here is what the picture of the front porch looked like before the power wash (if you look closely, all the white spots are the spiderwebs and the orangey-clay looking things are the dirt daubers):</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qN4oz-NNydg/UCz-FxGqWKI/AAAAAAAAAIM/hv3YIWAW13U/s1600/DSC_2154.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" mda="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qN4oz-NNydg/UCz-FxGqWKI/AAAAAAAAAIM/hv3YIWAW13U/s640/DSC_2154.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yXEh_rILBLI/UCz-UhtHixI/AAAAAAAAAIU/GCOaBuFSwss/s1600/DSC_2199.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" mda="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yXEh_rILBLI/UCz-UhtHixI/AAAAAAAAAIU/GCOaBuFSwss/s640/DSC_2199.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ogfx9-sxkMc/UCz-x-1KekI/AAAAAAAAAIk/LCRbzS_tD4o/s1600/DSC_2203.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" mda="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ogfx9-sxkMc/UCz-x-1KekI/AAAAAAAAAIk/LCRbzS_tD4o/s640/DSC_2203.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And here are the pictures <strong><em>after</em></strong> the power wash:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-okeuIzNq1PY/UCz_NT--qFI/AAAAAAAAAIs/Rb5lZOVMx4E/s1600/DSC_2211.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" mda="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-okeuIzNq1PY/UCz_NT--qFI/AAAAAAAAAIs/Rb5lZOVMx4E/s640/DSC_2211.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c6PFxGYYA5c/UCz_e4i6U_I/AAAAAAAAAI0/arh6oPFSuFg/s1600/DSC_2213.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" mda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c6PFxGYYA5c/UCz_e4i6U_I/AAAAAAAAAI0/arh6oPFSuFg/s640/DSC_2213.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KMlZ1P4nzMI/UCz_o-_s_4I/AAAAAAAAAI8/lmWIRRYDBcE/s1600/DSC_2215.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" mda="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KMlZ1P4nzMI/UCz_o-_s_4I/AAAAAAAAAI8/lmWIRRYDBcE/s640/DSC_2215.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So much better!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Notice the sliding glass door. These are some of the only pictures we have of the glass door installed. Removing the glass door was one of the first projects <strike>we</strike> Rick tackled. That is another story. It has to do with a pole and an inspection of the house that almost caused the deal to be called off! I will save that for <a href="http://onceuponacedarhouse.blogspot.com/2012/08/installing-front-door.html" target="_blank">another post</a>. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Our future plans for the front is to remove and replace the front porch. We are going to make the opening/railing centered in front of the new front door. Zach says it will make the house more welcoming. I believe he is right! I want to do an iron railing around all of the deck, but we will start with the front porch. Also, the stained glass will be covered up. Rick wants to do some sort of stone work on the front. We haven't got on the same page with this vision yet. More to come on that idea. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There you have the very front. Can you see the potential? </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

My daughter still lived at home and we owned a house in Garland, TX. We knew after she graduated, we would sell our house and begin the <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">hunt</span> for the perfect lakehouse. For those of you that personally know me and my husband (aka, Every Girl's Dream)...our ideas of the "perfect" lakehouse are on different ends of the spectrum (to say the least). My visions are of beautifully decorated, updated, and modern spaces. Every Girl's Dream loves a "fixer-upper." Due to budgetary contraints, I don't have to tell you who's vision won out!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We began to look at several area lakes. We wanted to be within close proximity (within an hour's drive) to the Dallas area. We knew we would not commit to the drive if it was a hassle to travel there. After many weekend trips, we finally decided on Cedar Creek Lake. I began to watch real estate listing and received daily/weekly updates through e-mails. Sometimes, properties looked amazing online. So...I would get all excited and we would jump in the car and head out to take a look. At times, we would drive through an area to get to the property and would drive through some really "run down" areas. I would tell Rick, "Scratch this one off the list. There is NO way I can stand driving through this every day to get to my home." He would roll his eyes and begin his lecture that we were never going to find a place with my attitude like that. ;)</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">The location was the most important aspect to our hunt. We wanted to be right on the water (we were buying a <em>lake</em>house after all!). I was perfectly content with a "channel" or cove location. Rick wanted open water. But he wanted it <em>cheap</em>. With that said, you can imagine how narrow our search became. After countless hours (and a whole year) of me searching through listings, I began to think we were never going to find the perfect place.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">My cousin and my uncle have property at Cedar Creek Lake. I had been to my cousin's lakehouse before. They have a house in Dallas and they go to the lake almost every weekend. My uncle had retired and bought a beautiful house on open water. With a gorgeous wrap-around porch. Then, my uncle decided to purchase a "fixer-upper" for my aunt. He found an old (cedar) house, submitted a very low offer on the property, and sat back and waited for the response. The owner accepted his offer. He began the renovations. Rick and I went out and looked at the property. We told each other we could do that. So we told my uncle to keep an eye out for a good piece of property for us! </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">Literally the next day, I get a call from my uncle and he said "Paulette, I found a great place. But you have to come today because this property will not last!" </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">So after work, we headed out once again to view the perfect property. When we first headed out there, we knew it was in a location we did not think we would be able to afford. That was the first good sign. It was by a very popular marina called Don's Port. At the time, the lake level was down and there wasn't much water. This cove had about 3 foot of water! When we first drove up, we could tell that it needed a lot of work. It had a main house and a guest house. Perfect! We could have a place to have all of our friends and relatives stay. Just what we were looking for! After looking at the large deck that overlooked the channel, we were sold and we were upon a cedar house! </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I will continue the story in another post, but for now, here is the view of the house as you first pull up. This picture was actually taken by our inspector. I will post my pictures that I took the first time we saw the property in another post. </span><br />
